Cytokeratin 14, a member of the Type I cytokeratin family, is often found in the basal cell layer of squamous epithelium. The cytokeratin 14 protein combines with homodimers of cytokeratin 5 to form a heterotetramer, which helps to maintain the structural integrity of the intracellular cytoskeletal network.1 Immunohistochemistry employing anti-cytokeratin 14 is helpful in differentiating squamous cell carcinomas from other tumors of epithelial origin.
