ErbB2 / HER2 neu (SP3) is a monoclonal antibody used in immunohistochemistry to detect the overexpression of the HER2/neu protein, a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family encoded by the ERBB2 gene. The SP3 clone specifically binds to the HER2 protein on the cell membrane, enabling precise visualization and assessment of HER2 status in tumor tissues, particularly in breast cancer. Overexpression or amplification of HER2 is associated with aggressive tumor behavior and poor prognosis, but also identifies patients who may benefit from targeted therapies such as trastuzumab (Herceptin) or pertuzumab. The SP3 clone provides high sensitivity and specificity, and is used both diagnostically and prognostically to guide treatment decisions. It is especially valuable in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples, offering a reliable and reproducible tool for assessing HER2 expression in clinical pathology.
