Acts as a transcriptional repressor, preventing retinoic acid from being signalled through the RARA, RARB, and RARG retinoic acid receptors. prevents the arrest, differentiation, and death of cells brought on by retinoic acid. This gene produces an antigen that cytolytic T cells recognise and that is preferentially expressed in human melanomas. Except for the testis, it is not expressed in normal tissues. The encoded protein serves as a repressor of retinoic acid receptor, and likely offers a growth advantage to cancer cells via this activity. Several transcript variations are produced by alternative splicing.
