Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) belongs to the platelet-derived growth factor family, specifically the cystine-knot growth factors. VEGF plays a crucial role in vasculogenesis (formation of the embryonic circulatory system) and angiogenesis (development of new blood vessels from existing vasculature). Elevated VEGF expression has been associated with reduced survival rates in certain cancers.
