Fighting Cancer, One Slide at a Time

Description

The peroxisomal and mitochondrial enzyme P504S, alsocalled α-Methylacyl coenzyme A racemase (AMACR), isinvolved in the formation of bile acids and the β-oxidationof branched chain fatty acids. As a gene that isoverexpressed in human prostate cancer and has little tono expression in normal or benign prostate glands, AMACRwas first discovered using a cDNA library. P504S has beendemonstrated to be a marker of prostatic cancer inimmunohistochemistry. Furthermore, P504S has beendiscovered to be expressed by prostate glands implicatedin prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), but P504S wasessentially undetectable in benign glands.
