The Epstein Barr virus, commonly known as HumanHerpesvirus 4 (HHV-4), is detected by the Epstein Barr virusantibody (EBV). One of the most prevalent viruses inhumans, it belongs to the Herpes family. The virus can carryout a variety of unique gene expression programs, whichare generally classified as either latent or lytic cycles. Theproduction of infectious virions is the ultimate goal of thelytic cycle, also known as productive infection, whichcauses the stepwise expression of many viral proteins.Programs that do not produce virions are known as latentcycle (lysogenic) programs. During latent cycle infection, avery small and unique set of viral proteins are generated.
